Step 1: Getting to Nepal
Your journey starts with a flight to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) is well-connected to major international airports around the world.
🛬 Tip: Spend at least a day or two in Kathmandu to acclimate, get permits, rent gear, and soak in the local culture.
Step 2: Fly to Lukla (The World’s Most Exciting Airport)
Most treks to EBC start with a 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, a small mountain town perched at 2,860 meters (9,383 ft). The flight is thrilling — and sometimes delayed due to weather — so flexibility is key.
🎒 Alternative: If flights are canceled, some trekkers choose to drive to Jiri or Phaplu and begin a longer trek from there.

Where You Sleep: Teahouse Trekking
Along the trail, you’ll stay in teahouses — cozy, basic lodges run by local families. They offer warm meals, beds (sometimes heated with yak dung!), and a chance to connect with fellow trekkers.
🥘 Tip: Try the famous Dal Bhat, the Nepali power meal of lentils, rice, and vegetables. It’s all-you-can-eat in most teahouses!
What You’ll Need: Permits & Prep
To trek to EBC, you’ll need:
-
TIMS card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)
-
Sagarmatha National Park Permit
-
Khumbu Rural Municipality Entry Permit
These can be arranged in Kathmandu or by your trekking agency.
🎒 Gear up with proper hiking boots, layers, a good sleeping bag, and a down jacket. Oxygen levels drop dramatically — so acclimatization and hydration are key.
